Summer Weight Distressed Coral Coloured Robe
This summer weight silk Chinese robe dates from the late 19th to the early 20th century. The trim on this piece is around the neckline and down the opening only. The trim consists of a two inch wide open weave black silk band embroidered with cranes and indigo flowers. It is bordered by a half inch black ribbon on one side and a multicoloured woven ribbon on the other in blues, greens and purple on a gold coloured background. The closure is a combination of silk loops with open work round gold coloured buttons. Part of the background cloth is an open weave medallion that is repeated throughout the body and sleeves of the garment. The cuffs of the sleeves have a very wide embroidered lining which would allow the wearer to manipulate the designs in a number of ways.
Condition: There is some staining on the inside lining of the sleeves. There is colour shift on both the front and back of the garment, most likely from the way it’s been displayed or stored. There are a few stains on the garment and one or two ink marks as well. There are some very minor repairs. Where there is some stress on the outside the garment under the arms, they have been lined from the inside in the light weight cotton that is basted in place and can be removed to be washed.
