Antique Woven Chinese Dragon Robe
This open work mesh robe probably dates from the late 19th or early 20th century. Much of the surface has been embroidered with imperial five toed dragons, pearls of knowledge and wisdom, and other traditional images. The ends of the embroidery have been meticulously woven back into the design, so that the inside looks as beautiful as the front. There are some repairs to the garment. The sleeves are quite distressed as the (probably silk) mesh has slowly decayed. The neckline to shoulder is highlighted with 2 1/2 inch black mesh band, embroidered with similar images to the rest of the garment. It is edged with a 1 inch wide ribbon made from copper wrapped thread and blue silk. This ribbon has also been used to make the loops for the round open work buttons. A most unusual piece.
